Uige, Angola (4E Sports) – At least 17 people died in a stampede before a football match between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo at a football stadium in Angola Friday.
The January 4th stadium in Uige already reached its capacity of 8,000 people but hundreds of fans stormed the gates to gain access, sparking a stampede.
According to medical officials, people had to walk over one another and got suffocated as the crowd surged.
Multiple media reports indicated that Angola’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has already ordered an investigation into the incident.
Santa Rita manager Sergio Traguil said he was devastated over the incident, which he only knew after he left the stadium.
“I only knew what happened when I left the stadium. No one around us knew,” said Traguil .
