A British tourist has been arrested and charged with “extramarital sex” after she reported being gang raped by two men, according to a UK based legal advice group Detained in Dubai.

Since all sex outside of marriage is illegal in the United Arab Emirates the 25 year old woman was arrested after she reported the incident for allegedly breaking the law.

The woman’s passport was confiscated before she was released on bail and her alleged attackers have already returned home.

Detained in Dubai says that the UAE has a long history of penalizing rape victims and that charges against the woman have been confirmed by The United Kingdoms Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

In 2009, a court in Abu Dhabi sentenced an 18-year-old woman to a year of imprisonment after being the victim of a group rape. In 2008 an Australian was drugged, raped and seriously injured by three men. She was also sentenced to 11 months of imprisonment.

The woman may face trial because of the charges and if convicted could spend years in prison, physical punishment which may include flogging or being stoned to death.
