Riverside, CA, United States (4E) – Police arrested a mother who they accused of intentionally leaving her two-year-old daughter at a Riverside market called Food 4 Less.
Authorities identified her as 31-year-old Chiengkham Vilaysane on Tuesday. Per the surveillance video, the woman and her daughter went inside the store, located at 4200 block of Van Buren Boulevard on Sunday. The toddler wandered off once inside the store but Vilaysane never looked for her.
At one point, while Vilaysane continued to stop, a good Samaritan brought the child back to her. However, the good Samaritan said she was told by Vilaysane to just leave the girl. Eventually, the mother abandoned her daughter while she paid for the groceries. Authorities took the girl and she identified her mother in the surveillance video.
It is possible that Vilaysane will face a felony charge of child endangerment. The investigation is pending.
Officer Ryan Railsback also said, “There’s more to the story, so we really want to figure out what’s really going on and what help can be provided to her. Yes, she could be facing some charges, but more importantly we want to figure out what’s going on with her and how we can help her with that first.”
The child is now under Child Protective Services custody. Vilaysane had no criminal record. It is unclear where the father of the child is.
Those familiar with the woman and the child are urged to call Detective Paul Miranda at (951) 353-7945.
