A man from Madera, Calif. went viral after he appeared on NBC’s “Today” show and the public discovered his rare medical condition in 2008.
Paul Karason, turned blue after taking a homemade remedy of colloidal silver. Colloidal silver is a suspension of silver in a liquid base – in this case, distilled water. Silver has antibacterial properties and has been used to fight infection for thousands of years. Before the invention of penicillin, the silver solution was commonly used by doctors as an antibiotic.
It continued to be used in some over-the-counter medicines until 1999, when the FDA banned it because it causes argyria, which is a result of the silver reacting with light the same way it does in photography.
That is exactly what happened to Krason, he developed a permanent case of argyria which turned not only his skin blue, but his internal organs as well. Once silver collects in the skin and other organs it does not dissipate, meaning someone with the condition will be blue for life.
Although Karason suffered from argyria, he had a long history of other health problems, mainly related to his heart. He was a heavy smoker, despite undergoing triple bypass surgery about eight years ago.
Paul Karason died at age 62 after being admitted into a Washington hospital in 2013, after suffering a heart attack. His estranged wife Jo Anna Karason said, He also had pneumonia and suffered a severe stroke.
A few days before his appearance on the “Today” show, Karason said, “You know, it’s not about what you look like, it’s your character.”
Well spoken, from a man showing his true colors.
