San Bernardino, CA, United States (4E) – A husband opened fire on his estranged wife at a school in San Bernardino, California, leading to her death as well as the injuring of two students, one of whom has died from his injuries, before he turned the gun to himself.
The incident took place at North Park Elementary School on Monday. San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified the shooter as 53-year-old Cedric Anderson of Riverside. He walked into the classroom of his estranged wife and had a large caliber revolver with him. He then fired on his estranged wife, 53-year-old Karen Elaine Smith, without saying anything.
The two students who were injured from the attack were standing behind the teacher. They student who died was identified as eight-year-old Jonathan Martinez of Loma Linda University Medical Center. The other student, who was not identified, is said to be nine years old and is already in stable condition. Police said they believe the two students were not targeted by Anderson they just happened to be behind Smith that is why they also suffered from gunshot wounds.
Burguan added that there were a total of 15 students from grades one to four at the classroom for special needs where the shooting took place. Aside from Smith, one more adult was inside the classroom.
Police said they received reports about the shooting at around 10:30 A.M. They said there was no indication that Anderson had a gun with him when he went inside the school as he signed in at the front officer before entering. Anderson is known at the school and told the employees he will be dropping something off with his estranged wife.
Burguan added, “I’m told that their marriage was relatively short. They’ve only been married for a few months and they’ve been separated for about the last month, month-and-a-half, roughly, when this incident took place. But there’s nobody that in the investigation has come forward to say that they saw this coming.” It remained unclear why they separated.
The investigation is ongoing.
